Getting to Uppsala from the airport

Almost all international flights to Stockholm arrive at Arlanda airport, which is actually a bit closer to Uppsala than it is to Stockholm.

(Click here to see which terminal your airline uses...it may be useful to know this when going back to the airport for your return trip!).

If, instead of flying, you are coming to Sweden by car or train, then you may want to look at the official Swedish website for tourism and travel information, visit-sweden.com. Look for the "Travel Guide" there.
The new Öresund bridge and tunnel between Copenhagen and Malmö costs SEK 275 for a car with up to five people. A variety of ferry connections are also available, such as the Superfast Ferries between Rostock, Germany and Södertälje, near Stockholm.

...by train

The train for Uppsala's Central station departs from the train station downstairs from Sky City, between Terminals 4 and 5 (click here for a schematic map of the terminals and Sky City). Note that this "long-distance" train line #51 is not the same as the Arlanda Express, which leaves for Stockholm.

You can use your credit card to purchase tickets at machines run by the regional transportation network TiM either by the escalator or on the train platform. The one-way trip from Arlanda to Uppsala in a second-class car costs SEK 76. You can also buy a ticket on the train itself, but then it will cost SEK 80 (check the Swedish price table here).

...by bus

Another convenient way to get to Uppsala is via the area bus network. The airport buses leave at least once every half hour from just outside Terminals 2, 4 and 5 in Arlanda (click here to see bus stop locations). The one-way fare to Uppsala is SEK 80 for adults and SEK 40 for children. Tickets are sold on the bus or at counters in the arrivals areas; it is best to buy them at the counter if you have any doubts or questions about the schedule. You have the choice of two buses:

...by bus and taxi

Many hotels in Uppsala are within walking distance from the two main stops of the airport bus (so it is worth checking beforehand). However, you can also arrange to have a taxi pick you up directly at the bus stop, in which case you should tell the bus driver that you want the "Flygbusstaxi" instead of the normal "flygbuss" ticket. The price (between SEK 150 and 245, depending on the exact destination) includes the taxi ride to a single address for you and up to 3 accompanying persons, provided all have paid the normal one-way bus fare.

For the return trip, you can order a "Flygbusstaxi" from your hotel to the airport bus by calling 018-15 15 15 at least one hour before you wish to depart. This can be done between 5:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m.

...by taxi

Taxis leave from taxi stands in front of each terminal. Prices vary according to the company, so be sure check the price beforehand. Prices are often displayed on the side window of the taxi. The two largest taxi companies in Uppsala charge less than SEK 400 for one person.

It may be cheaper to order a taxi ahead of time. For example, Uppsala Taxi even allows you to do this via a Web interface before 4:00 p.m. at least one working day prior to your arrival. (Follow the links "Förbeställ taxi" and then "In English").

...by car

The most direct way is to get on the E4 highway, northbound, from the airport. It takes about half an hour to drive the 35 km to Uppsala, unless there is heavy traffic (which is not often). Following the signs to Uppsala as you continue on the E4, you will probably see the town's water tower and, of course, its cathedral in the distance. You will enter town after going through a large traffic circle, where you can (for example) go left and then take the third right turn onto Kungsgatan, which will take you right past the railway station on the right and the old town on the left.

You may want to consult this interactive on-line map for details; the E4 is the thick red line that passes through Knivsta and enters Uppsala from the south.
