Low Surface Brightness Galaxies
D. Bomans, R.-J. Dettmar,
L. Haberzettl
Until the mid seventies the knowledge was that the spiral
galaxies exist only with typical central surface brightness of μ0(B)
= 21.5 mag arcsec-2, an observation result referred to as Freeman's
Law. Since several years we know that this assumption was the result
of selection effects especially due to the intrinsic non-linearity
and small dynamic range of photographic plate material used. With
the process of photographic amplification and now due to the use of
large format CCDs we know now that low surface brightness(LSB) galaxies,
with central surface brightness fainter μ0(B) = 23.0 mag arcsec-2,
exist in large number. LSB galaxies are not only dwarf galaxies but
show the same diversity as high surface brightness galaxies.
