My research mostly (but not exclusively) concerns the interstellar medium (ISM to the experts) in galaxies, including starbursting systems, barred galaxies, dwarfs and (almost) normal objects like the center of our own Milky Way or the nearby Grand Design spiral galaxy M51. I am especially interested in the relation between the physical parameters of the gas, mainly its temperature and density, its chemistry and the dynamical conditions it is subject to. However... Being the director of one of Germany's major planetariums is a full time job. Thus, unfortunately, little time remains for research. In compensation, I get the chance to communicate my love of astronomy to all kinds of people - and to work with the latest imaging technology (worth checking out by visiting the planetarium!). |
