Literature

  • Lecture notes (will be handed out during the course)
  • Selected sections from different textbooks, such as:
    • Scheffler, H. & Elsässer, H. 1987. Physics of the Galaxy and Interstellar Matter.
      Berlin: Springer-Verlag. pp. 365-413.
    • Binney, J. & Tremaine, S. 1987. Galactic Dynamics.
Princeton: Princeton University Press. Chapter 8, "Kinetic Theory.
  • Research articles as needed
    • For example, The Dynamics of Disk-Shaped Galaxies (Lin, C. C. 1967, ARA&A 5, 453)
    • A good place to search for articles is the abstract service of NASA's Astrophysics Data System. If you cannot give the name of an author, type your subject under "Title words" or "Abstract words" (in quotation marks if it is more than one word). You will probably get a list with far too many articles. One way to narrow the search is to limit it to one journal like ARA&A or A&ARv. Click on the box for "Selected publications" and enter the journal's abbreviation there.

Course requirements

  • Active participation (see details here)
  • Problem set and in-class problems
  • Final exam
