Heidi, Alva und Elmar Träbert:
Productions at Musisches Zentrum der RUB

The MZ arts center at Bochum university is a center for personal activities in photography, graphics/etching, sculpture, music and theatre. There are no classes and credits, but studios and advice for people who want to try out. One after another, the family has been drawn into this unique place with its marvellous opportunities.

At the Boston Museum of Fine Arts around 1989/90, Heidi Träbert has enjoyed drawing classes given by Leila Joy Rosenthal. Since the early 1990es, she has learned graphics, etching and printing at the MZ, mostly from Barabara Grosse (learning by doing!), and also photography / dark room work at MZ's photo section. She has participated in a number of MZ projects, including various graphics and photo exhibitions and the 1997 university calendar project.

Here are some MZ photography exhibition samples (with Heidi's participation):

"Da gewesen" (1998) ("Having been there")

"Blechreste" (1998) ("Leftover metal" - inside the university cooling power plant before it was dismantled)

"Überblick" (1999) (Annual "review")

"Zeit" (2000) ("Time")

"Krakau - Auschwitz" (2001) ("Cracow - Auschwitz")

"Dreizehn Möglichkeiten, Landschaft zu betrachten" (2001) ("Thirteen ways of viewing landscape")

Heidi enjoys photographing the theatrical productions of the Studiobühne, the student theatre at the MZ. Her photographic results are often on display in the theatre foyer.

In the Summer of 2002, she had her first single-artist exhibition, "Zeichen und Strukturen" ("Signs and structures"), presenting etchings and photography at the Musisches Zentrum of the university.

"KulturLandschaftIndustrie" ("CultureLandscapeIndustry") Graphics exhibition by MZ artists at Heinrich-Morgner-Haus, Soest (2002)

"Crazy Audimax" (digitally processed photos of the Audimax buiding)

In 2004, she participated in the Musisches Zentrum MZ Open event with Chinese kalligraphy-inspired works in a special chamber installation, and also with panoramic and classic photographs.

From 2005 to 2008, she presented colour photos of the former university cooling plant as well as large black and white photos and university panoramic views at the university's international center IBZ Beckmanns Hof. The latter hung upstairs until mid 2009.

The Pixelprojekt_Ruhrgebiet, a long-running Ruhr area photographic initiative, has accepted a series of Heidi's photos into their collection.

From November 2004 to January 2005, Exhibition of photographs "Heidi Träbert Fotografie" at "Kultur-Magazin Lothringen", Lothringer Str. 36c, 44805 Bochum (BO-Gerthe),

This exhibition comprised large scale colour photos of industrial (Essen and Duisburg), university (Bochum and Witten), and modern architectural (Bochum, Essen, Düsseldorf) settings, many of them in panoramic recording, examples of toning of and painting on photographs, as well as double exposures and multifaceted, detailed self portraits.

From mid of February to late April 2006, Galerie Wurm at Herne-Wanne presented a selection of Heidi's etchings.

From April 2006, and for more than a year, the new Convention Center of the unversity displayed "Bilder einer Baustelle", 100 large size photographs in which Heidi documents the reconstruction effort of the mensa building complex.

In 2007, she participated in the MZ photo project "BetonSchönheit" which resulted in an exhibition shown at Bochum and Cracow and in a coffeetable book.

A selection of Heidi's artwork is shown in a collection made at the occasion of H. H. Koch's end of term as the MZ arts section head.

Alva has done some etching, printing, and sculpture (pottery) and she occasionally enjoys drawing and painting. In 2012, she has begun to do metalwork as well.

In the mid-1960s, Elmar enjoyed introductions to pottery, bookbinding and photography at Jugendhof Vlotho (senior instructor Georg Dinglinger). After a long break, since 1996, Elmar has taken up sculpture and dappled with wood, Ytong (TM) (an artificial lightweight stone for building) and real stone (Tuff, lime stone). Some of the results star outside the family residence (it is easier to dress a house with gargoyles than to maintain it ...) and below.

Much more of this can be seen on Elmar's Art Page
or, occasionally, in the almost annual "review" exhibitions at the Musisches Zentrum.
"Überblick 2001/2002" ("Review 2001/2002", in this case including two pieces made by Elmar)

From mid January to late April of 2003, much of Elmar's wood work (30 pieces), two Ytong figures, and a tuff stone sculpture were on display in the foyer showcases and the arts workshop of Musisches Zentrum.

In 2010, the Ruhr area served as a Cultural Capital of Europe. An exhibition "Finding shapes - writing shapes" together with M. Reza Ghafariha at 'Musisches Zentrum der Ruhr-Universität Bochum' (April through November) showcased different approaches to sculpture, from Persian / Islamic calligraphy (print graphics and sculpture by M. Reza Ghafariha) and from the elements of the classical modern period (stone, ytong, and wood pieces as well as photographs by Elmar Träbert).

At LLNL Livermore (CA, USA), Elmar has begun to decorate the newly occupied wing of building B481 with sculptures, photos, and chalk sketches. The first batch of photos addresses the San Francisco Bay Area from the ocean beach to the hills beyond Livermore. At the occasion of a little exhibition in 2011 (see the 2011 annual overview ), the displays have been expanded. After another office move, works remain in three laboratory locations, as well as with several colleagues.

A selection of Elmar's sculptures is shown in a collection made at the occasion of H. H. Koch's end of term as the MZ arts section head.

Several Ytong pieces placed in the Botanical garden of the university.

In the winter semester 2013/14, the Bochum university library (UB RUB) shows a sizeable selection (at times some 77 pieces) of Elmar's sculptures under the title "Köpfe zwischen Büchern / Heads among books".

There also is an official library page on the exhibition.

From December 2014, Verbundbibliothek GA, the joint library of two faculties (four fields) in the humanities at the university (RUB), hosts an exhibition "BücherKöpfeSkulpturenVerbund" that has been derived from the earlier exhibition in the central library, but is augmented by a third of new pieces. The initially 72 pieces are distributed over all five library levels. Eröffnung / Opening 11 Dec 2014
The full exhibition runs through March of 2015; 18 Gargoyles become a semi-permanent fixture, while most wooden pieces stay on for an unspecified time (a living exhibition, with occasional additions and exchanges).
